Walk around Muro

A rich cultural heritage

Muro is located in the north-west of Mallorca. The municipality has a population of around 6,750 inhabitants, and a surface area of 55.4 km2. Below is an itinerary through the village, to discover the valuable architectural and cultural heritage it still preserves. Bars with a traditional atmosphere are dotted along the route, and we recommend you stop along the way to try a ‘tapa’ or two, and examples of the rich local gastronomy: have some pa amb oli (bread with tomato and cold meats) for breakfast or a glass of the increasingly-excellent island wines.

Itinerary
Parish church of Sant Joan - Casa de la Vila – El Comtat – Ethnological Museum – Oratory of La Sang – Church of Santa Aina – Cloister of the Minim Fathers –

1. The route begins in the square called Plaça del Comte d’Empúries, where the parish church of Sant Joan stands, a church in Gothic tradition with an outstanding Baroque altarpiece on the main altar.

2. On the opposite side of the square stands the town hall or Casa de la Vila, in regionalist style.

3. From here we walk to the oldest centre of the municipality, El Comtat. It is well worth noticing the stately homes that were gradually built around the church over the centuries.

4. Our next stop is the Ethnological Museum, situated in the building called Casal Can Alomar. An interesting display of traditional ceramics, old farm implements, etc.

5. We carry on to Calle Màrtirs, where we will find the simple oratory of La Sang, constructed in the early 15th century.

6. Our walk ends at the church of Santa Anna and the Cloister of the Minim Fathers. The definitive construction of the church was carried out in the early 18th century, and now it contains a school and the Music School. The cloister of the Minim Fathers, for its part, is a valuable specimen of the municipality’s legacy of convents.
